Why the range number keeps dropping
If you leased an electric car sometime in the last couple of years, you've probably noticed that the range estimate on the dash has been sliding since Thanksgiving. A car that showed 250 miles on a full charge in October might be showing 190 or less on a cold January morning in Queens. This is not a malfunction and it is not your battery failing. It is just what cold does to a lithium-ion battery, and it happens more noticeably here than it would in a milder climate, because Queens gets real winter: weeks of temperatures in the 20s and 30s, wind off the water in places like the Rockaways and Whitestone, and enough damp cold to make everything feel colder than the thermometer says.
What the cold is actually doing
Batteries move ions around to produce power, and that chemical process slows down when it's cold, the same way your fingers get clumsy in the cold. Less power available means the car's computer lowers its range estimate to be honest with you. On top of that, you're running the cabin heater, which in most EVs draws directly from the battery rather than from waste heat the way a gas engine's heater does. Seat heaters and defrosters add a smaller but real draw too.
In a two-family house in Middle Village or a semi-detached in Bayside, this shows up as a very specific annoyance: the car that comfortably did a round trip to LaGuardia and back with charge to spare in September now needs a top-up if you also ran errands out to Fresh Meadows.

What Queens housing does to charging
A lot of Queens housing stock, the prewar semi-attached homes in Jackson Heights, the postwar brick ones in Fresh Meadows and Bellerose, was not built with car charging in mind. Many garages are detached, unheated, and set back from the house, sometimes down a narrow driveway shared with a neighbor. If you're charging with a basic cord plugged into an outdoor or garage outlet, that outlet and the cord itself are sitting in the same cold air as the car. Charging slows down in the cold too, so a session that took four hours in October might take five or six in February.
This is worth checking yourself: go out to where the car charges and note whether it's an enclosed garage, an open carport, or just a driveway. An enclosed, even unheated, garage keeps the car and the charging equipment out of direct wind, and that alone helps more than people expect.
What you can check yourself
Before you assume something is wrong, look at a few ordinary things. Tire pressure drops in cold weather, roughly a pound or two for every ten-degree drop, and low tires increase rolling resistance, which eats range on top of whatever the cold battery is already losing. Check the tires monthly through winter with a simple gauge. Also check whether you're preconditioning the cabin while the car is still plugged in, warming it up using house power instead of battery power before you drive. Most leased EVs have this as an app or timer setting, and it's the single easiest way to claw back some range in winter.
If you park outside, a car cover or even parking on the side of the house that blocks prevailing wind can make a noticeable difference over a Queens winter, since wind chill affects the battery pack housing the same way it affects you standing on the platform waiting for the train.
Where this stops being a homeowner fix
Some range loss is normal and temporary. It will recover somewhat as temperatures rise, though rarely all the way back until spring. What's not normal is a sudden, sharp drop, a car that won't hold a charge overnight in a heated garage, or a charging session that stalls partway through repeatedly. Those point to something with the battery, the onboard charger, or the home charging equipment itself, and that's a job for the dealer or the manufacturer's service line, not something to troubleshoot in the driveway.
It's also worth calling an electrician, not the leasing company, if you're noticing the home charging setup itself acting strange in cold weather: a breaker tripping, a cord that gets warm to the touch, or a charging station that won't reset. Cold doesn't cause electrical faults by itself, but it can expose wiring or connections that were already marginal, and that's not something to wait out until spring.
